Welcome to the Santa Cruz District of the California State Park System. As you peruse this site you will discover the many rich opportunities awaiting you in the state parks that capture the beauty and history of this incredible region. We have something to offer everyone.
The Santa Cruz District is remarkable in that it captures the traditions, passions and diversity of the state, its people and its history. This year, for example, we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Big Basin is the oldest state park in the California State Park System. It represents the beginning of the preservation and conservation movement as people with vision and passion recognized the need to preserve ancient redwood forests for future generations to enjoy. Just walk around park headquarters at Big Basin, or enjoy an evening campfire program and you will be immersed in the tradition this park represents. Traditional park settings and values can be found throughout the district.
The diversity of the district is also remarkable. This is especially true of its natural, cultural and recreational resources. Within a relatively short span of time, you can walk from the shoreline of the beautiful Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and into the cool breath of the redwoods. The Santa Cruz bioregion is especially rich in terms of diversity and uniqueness. Similarly, the parks in the district tell the story of the people of the region over time. From the Ohlone peoples, to the missionaries, and the early settlers you will discover each of their stories through historic structures, artifacts and great interpretive programs. If you are looking for a variety of active and passive forms of recreation, we have that as well. The district has over 200 miles of trails, miles of beaches, rock climbing opportunities, and so much more. This site is aimed at matching your interests with great places for you to experience them.
One of the reasons I chose to work in the Santa Cruz District is the passion of staff, volunteers and the community. You will find that we have made a commitment that you, your friends and family have a safe and enjoyable visit to this incredible region of California. This passion for preserving, for sharing, for enjoying is infectious. I invite you to discover and experience the richness of the Santa Cruz District.
